Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the official, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
